Libya’s joint committee responsible for drafting electoral laws, known as the “6+6 Committee,” affirmed that the laws it sent to the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) are final and cannot be modified.
In a statement, the committee said on Sunday the version of the electoral laws that originated from the House of Representatives and was submitted to the HNEC is the final one that was legally signed by the committee without any changes or amendments.
It noted that the work of the committee tasked under Constitutional Amendment 13, and according to the mandates of its members by virtue of decisions from the House of Representatives and State Council in this regard, has ended.
The committee clarified that what it arrived at was based on consensus from previous dialogues with various parties in an atmosphere of mistrust and ongoing conflicts on different levels.
The committee believed that its work was not ideal but the best possible given the circumstances Libya is going through and the significant divergences between the parties. It also asserted no domestic or foreign party interfered in its work.
The statement touched on other details about the laws including not adopting administrative numbers for a certain category, requiring two rounds in the presidential election, and simultaneous elections in implementation of Constitutional Amendment 13.
