Fezzan – A field committee from the Al-Haruj Al-Aswad Reserve in central Libya conducted inspection tours. They were accompanied by members of the Tourism Police and Agricultural Police. The tours covered several sites within the reserve’s scope. This responded to citizen complaints about environmental violations. There were repeated infringements on natural and heritage resources.
Naji Al-Soufi, Director of the Fezzan Platform, spoke to Al-Anbaa Al-Libya newspaper. He stated these tours are part of ongoing monitoring efforts. The goal is to protect the Al-Haruj Al-Aswad Reserve. This includes preserving its natural and historical components. It aims to prevent tampering and depletion. Al-Soufi noted the extent of recorded violations. This reflects a need for enhanced oversight within the reserve.
Naji added that the tour covered several areas. These included Al-Fuqaha, Al-Mashqaq, Qoor Al-Baqar, Al-Qoor Al-Sab’a, and Al-Halaq. Numerous violations were observed. These included cutting acacia trees. Deliberate damage to rock carvings was also found. Illegal hunting operations were present. Such activities pose a direct threat to the environmental balance. They also threaten the heritage in the region.
Al-Soufi explained the committee faces field challenges. A key challenge is the lack of logistical capabilities. This especially concerns transportation and communication. It limits rapid access to remote sites. It also hinders immediate follow-up on violations.
Al-Soufi called on relevant authorities for urgent intervention. He requested necessary support. This support would help protect this natural and national heritage. He praised the General Command and the Authority’s head. They supported the reserve and issued its establishment decision. This was an important step. It helps preserve this environmental and historical treasure for future generations.
