The Minister of Local Governance of the Government of National Unity, Badr El Din Al-Toumi, met on Friday with the mayors of the municipalities of Libya’s southern region of Fezzan to discuss the closure of Al-Sharara oil field, in the city of Ubari, which occurred on Wednesday 3 January, by a group of protesters.
According to a statement by Al-Toumi’s ministry, during the meeting, the protesters’ requests and the fundamental issues that led to the closure of the site were addressed.
Al-Toumi reportedly confirmed that, as part of resolving the fuel shortage, coordination has been made with Brega Petroleum Marketing Company (BPMC) to increase the quantities of fuel to be allocated to the Sebha depot.
The minister then underlined “the importance of maintaining a constructive dialogue with the mayors” and the need to “find a solution that takes into account all requests”.
During the meeting, an agreement was reached on the need to coordinate an in-depth meeting with Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, the relevant ministries and relevant bodies to follow up on the ongoing projects planned to be implemented in the South.
Last Wednesday, a group protesters shutdown oil production at Al-Sharara. The demands include resolving the fuel shortage in Fezzan, completing the construction of the Southern Refinery and other issues, such as managing the Ubari General Hospital.
