The High National Election Commission (HNEC) did not issue a final list of candidates running for the long-waited presidential and parliamentary elections, a source told The Libya Update on Saturday.
This comes after the Presidential Council released a statement Tuesday saying that its chairman, Mohamed al-Menfi, met with presidential and parliamentary candidates.
An official source from the HNEC, who requested anonymity for safety reasons, said the Presidential Council’s statement could result in “legal problems for the Commission in the future.”
“We did not issue the final lists of the actual candidates for the presidential and parliamentary elections,” the source said.
“This is an attempt to overstep he work of the HNEC and create false candidates for the presidential and parliamentary elections,” the source added.
“This political tampering of some authorities in the state is one of the reasons that led to postponing the elections last December,” the source explained.
