Suleiman Al Harari, the head of the Interior Committee of the House of Representatives, has expressed “great frustration” with the European Union’s policy towards the immigration crisis and considers it mainly responsible for the worsening human conditions in Libya. Al Harari explained that intercepting migrants in the middle of the sea and returning them to Libya cannot lead to alleviating the crisis. He emphasized that Libya cannot address the immigration crisis on behalf of Europe as it is suffering from political and economic crises.
“Libyan institutions concerned with migration issues have become incapable of providing food and medical aid to thousands of irregular migrants who arrive daily in Libya, Al Harari added, calling for the transfer of migrants to a third country to address their conditions.
Al Harari pointed out that the European Union’s programs related to securing Libyan borders and enhancing the capacity of Libyan agencies to combat human trafficking activities are weak. He called for enhancing joint coordination between Libya and the European Union to tackle the crisis of immigration that both countries face together¹.
