Yousef Al-Aqouri, a member of the House of Representatives, called on Tuesday for holding presidential elections on the basis of the three electoral districts.
Al-Aqouri made his remarks in a speech before the House, which convened today to discuss a bill on the election of the country’s future president.
He criticized the demand for holding presidential elections on the basis of a single constituency, calling for abolishing a condition in the bill which requires candidates to obtain the recommendation of 20 deputies to authorize his or her candidacy.
The Libyan MP stressed upon the need to “introduce other criteria regarding the conditions for running in the presidential elections without having it dependable to population size”.
“Tripoli is the highest in terms of population, and so [under the current conditions] the position of the president will be guaranteed to Tripoli,” he added. “The criterion of geographical area and natural resources must be added to other criteria regarding the conditions for candidacy for the presidential elections,” the Cyrenaica MP explained.
