Istanbul – The Libyan parliamentary division participated in the Inter-Parliamentary Union. This was for the closing session of the 152nd Assembly. It also included the 217th session of the Governing Council. These meetings were held in Istanbul, Turkey. The delegation was led by First Deputy Speaker Fawzi Al-Nuairi. Members included Sultanah Al-Mismari and Rabia Abu Ras.
The final day featured the presentation of the discussions’ final document. Decisions were officially adopted. Reports from permanent committees were also submitted to the Assembly.
In this context, the First Deputy Speaker presented the committee’s final report. He chairs the IPU’s Permanent Committee on United Nations Affairs. The report reviewed the most important discussions held. These particularly concerned the role of the UN Resident Coordinator and team. Their role is to enhance cooperation with the government and parliament in Turkey.
Several sessions discussed a proposal to amend the UN Charter. A civil society coalition submitted this proposal. It was titled ‘Article 109: Renewing the UN Charter’. Discussions also explored ways to empower the UN. This empowerment would help the UN face current challenges. New members were also elected to the committee’s bureau.
Regarding the Governing Council’s work, human rights reports were presented. Reports on other committee and body activities were also shown. The Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union was elected. The Libyan parliamentary division participated in the voting.
