Moscow – The Russian company Rosatom announced the manufacturing of the first “PEB-106” nuclear reactor. The reactor is designed for use in floating nuclear power plants. The company is developing these plants to supply power to the Russian Far East.
Alexey Likhachev, the director general of the company, stated that Russia is currently the only country with an operational floating nuclear power plant. He emphasized the effort to maintain leadership in developing small reactor technologies. He also highlighted the goal to provide innovative energy solutions inside and outside Russia.
Likhachev described the manufacturing of the first reactor of this type as a significant achievement in the development of floating nuclear power plants.
Rosatom explained that these plants combine the reliability and environmental friendliness of large nuclear power plants. However, they offer higher flexibility in grid integration. They also allow for gradual capacity increases according to demand growth. Furthermore, they provide a stable, long-term tariff despite price fluctuations.
Each “PEB-106” plant will be equipped with two small “RITM-200S” nuclear reactors. Each reactor generates a power capacity of about 58 megawatts.
These reactors are a development of the “RITM-200” series. This series is currently used in Russian nuclear icebreakers under the Arktika-class nuclear icebreaker project. The project includes vessels such as “Sibir”, “Ural”, and “Yakutia” under the Russian government project 22220.
