Geneva – The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has issued a new alert. It warns that desert locust swarms are moving towards southern Libya. The swarms are coming from the African Sahel region.
The FAO urged authorities to monitor the situation. This includes areas in southern Libya, southern Algeria, northeastern Mali, and northwestern Niger. Winter breeding of desert locusts may occur in these regions after heavy rainfall.
The organization warned the swarms could pose a significant threat to agricultural crops. This will happen if appropriate preventive measures are not taken.
