The Zawiya University Student Union has announced the suspension of classes on Thursday in all colleges in the city due to ongoing protests.
The union explained via its Facebook page that the city is witnessing “a popular uprising,” with major roads, entrances, the coastal road, and Martyrs’ Square closed in protest against the deteriorating security situation.
Last night, Zawiya witnessed protests that began in the city square and reached the Security Directorate and the Municipal Council headquarters, rejecting what they described as the worsening security situation.
The popular anger comes after videos circulated showing the torture of citizens in the city. A few days ago, the city witnessed armed clashes that resulted in the deaths of two civilians and the displacement of several families from their homes, according to local sources.
