Major General Emad Mustafa Trabelsi, the Acting Interior Minister of Libya’s Government of National Unity, affirmed the ministry’s full preparedness to secure the municipal elections scheduled for August 16, 2025, ensuring a safe and organized environment across Libyan territories. The statement came during an extensive meeting attended by key figures, including Emad al-Sayeh, head of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Major General Mustafa al-Wuhaishi, head of the Internal Security Agency, Stephanie Khoury, Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Libya, alongside security officials, regional security directors, and officers from various agencies.
The meeting focused on the security plan designed to safeguard the electoral process, covering 50 municipalities—34 in the west, eight in the east, and eight in the south—across 726 polling stations. Approximately 400,000 voter cards are expected to be issued for the elections.
Trabelsi highlighted the Interior Ministry’s effective role in previous municipal elections, securing polling stations, managing voter access, and maintaining overall security, which contributed to the process’s success without notable breaches. He emphasized the security forces’ capability to protect upcoming elections, including potential parliamentary and presidential votes, underscoring the importance of ensuring voters’ freedom to exercise their democratic rights.
The minister also noted ongoing coordination with the HNEC to transport and secure electoral materials, adding that uncollected voter cards have been returned to the commission’s storage to uphold procedural integrity.
Emad al-Sayeh praised the Interior Ministry’s efforts, noting that previous municipal elections proceeded without tensions in voting districts and commending the high level of coordination with the HNEC to ensure transparency and success.
In closing, Trabelsi reiterated instructions to all security agencies to enhance readiness and coordination with the HNEC and other relevant bodies to ensure the success of the upcoming elections and project a positive image of Libya to the world.
