Libya needs elections as soon as possible, not another extension of the transitional period as voted by the House of Representatives, Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh said.
Dbeibeh was speaking at an event in Tripoli with the heads of the military groups of the western region and local tribal and social leaders. During the event, he called on the Libyan people to take to the streets and ask for elections.
“Over the past decade, Libya has been dominated by a political class that has hijacked the money and the decision-making process,” he said.
“The same people who legitimized the wars in Libya are now returning to share power. What is happening under the dome of Parliament is absurd and it is a fraud,” the premier added.
“Few in Parliament dominate decisions with intimidation, lack of transparency and integrity,” he said.
The parliament had chosen former interior minister Fathi Bashagha by a vote on Thursday. However, the incumbent, Dbeibeh, has rejected the parliament’s moves, saying he will only relinquish power after a national election.
