Benghazi – The Chairwoman of the House of Representatives’ Committee for Women and Children’s Affairs, MP Intisar Shunib, held a meeting with the Libyan Government’s Minister of Justice, Khalid Massoud, to discuss a number of social and family issues related to women and children. The meeting concluded with a set of recommendations and practical understandings aimed at supporting the family and protecting the social fabric.
According to the spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Abdullah Blihaq, the two parties agreed to prepare a draft law to combat domestic violence based on the provisions of Islamic Sharia and authentic Libyan customs, ensuring that this phenomenon is addressed with a methodology that respects the cultural and social specificity of Libyan society.
It was also agreed to establish specialized offices to study divorce cases in summary and primary courts to alleviate the burden on the judiciary in personal status cases, in addition to regulating the handling of full custody cases through guardianship orders instead of lengthy judicial rulings, which will help expedite decisions on sensitive family files.
Both sides emphasized the importance of the awareness-raising role of educational institutions, through psychological counselors and social workers, as well as holding lectures and awareness campaigns that promote the values of family cohesion and support the prevention of social problems.
The meeting also stressed the need to adopt national programs for those about to get married and to review the decisions of the expired-mandate Government of National Unity regarding the marriage grant and its resulting social effects. They emphasized the importance of coordinating with the Supreme Judicial Council, the Attorney General, and the Ministries of Social Affairs and Education to ensure the integration of efforts in addressing family issues and reducing phenomena and crimes that affect the stability of the family and society, in accordance with Islamic Sharia, law, and Libyan customs.
