The European Union has welcomed the proposal presented by UNSMIL Officer-in-Charge Stephanie Koury during her briefing on Libya in the UN Security Council.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) revealed its plan to address the political deadlock in the country, by forming a technical committee of Libyan experts to form a consensus government.
“The launch of a new UN initiative to revive the political process in Libya is a timely and positive development, which we fully support,” EU said in a statement.
“We strongly encourage all Libyan and international stakeholders to engage in a meaningful, responsible and constructive manner with the UN and its representative in Libya,” the statement pointed out.
“Our collective commitment to this new mediation mechanism is essential to ensure its success,” it added.
The European Union renewed its “firm support” to the central role of UNSMIL and to its work towards a political solution, based on an inclusive inter-Libyan dialogue, aimed at renewing the legitimacy of Libyan institutions through national elections, according to the statement.
