Ghat – The city of Ghat is preparing to launch a project to pave the 35-kilometer road linking it to the Essin border crossing with Algeria. The initiative aims to improve the local road infrastructure after surfacing and maintenance work stopped in the 1980s.
Ahmed Al-Souqi, the mayor of Ghat, told Libyan News Agency that the new road will connect the city to Al-Barkat municipality, which lies about seven kilometers away. The road will then extend to the Essin border crossing. Al-Souqi said this is the first road paving and renovation project in the city since the 1980s.
The project will be carried out by Agadir International General Contracting Company, in partnership with the Military Engineering Division of the Land Forces. Al-Souqi noted that Ghat’s road network has deteriorated due to decades without maintenance.
The mayor’s statement followed a meeting with representatives of the contractor, as well as officials from local service sectors and related departments. They reviewed implementation procedures, discussed proposed routes and connections, and examined technical requirements to ensure the project meets approved standards.
Al-Souqi expressed his appreciation for the support of the General Command of the Libyan Arab Armed Forces for development projects in southern regions. He said he hopes additional projects will help further improve Ghat’s internal road network and infrastructure.
