Head of Teachers Union released following arrest in Tripoli

The Head of Teachers Union Abdulnabi Al-Naf was released on Sunday after he was arrested last Thursday at Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport.

Al-Naf spoke to reporters following his release and explained the circumstances of his arrest. He said that a “security force”, which he did not name, detained him upon his arrival at the airport based on an arrest warrant issued by the Attorney-General.

“I stayed in the office of the Attorney-General for about 7 hours, then they put me in Ain Zara prison for two and a half days,” he said.

Al-Naf denied being notified of the arrest warrant, and said he was treated “disgracefully” during detention.

He explained that the reason for his arrest was over a 2019 lawsuit filed by the former minister of education, which stemmed from a “personal dispute”, according to Al-Naf.

He said that his release was the result of efforts made by teachers, school headmasters and tribal representatives.
