Benghazi – A committee held its first meeting today. It was formed by a decision of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Its mandate is to monitor Libyans imprisoned abroad. The committee discussed legal and humanitarian issues. These issues concerned Libyan citizens detained outside the country.
The committee reviewed joint working mechanisms. This review was with Counselor Ibrahim Boushnaf. He heads the committee monitoring prisoners inside Libya. He was appointed by the parliament-mandated government. The committee includes House of Representatives members Al-Salehin Abdulnabi, Ahmed Al-Sharef, and Al-Sayyida Al-Yacoubi. Ashraf Al-Daws serves as the legal advisor. They discussed coordination and unifying efforts. The goal is to address related files comprehensively. They also aim to address related issues effectively.
The meeting also discussed prison conditions inside the country. It addressed problems facing correctional institutions. It also covered obstacles for rehabilitation institutions. They explored ways to implement judicial rulings against detainees. This is in cooperation with the Deputy Commander-in-Chief. This aims to support the rule of law. It also seeks to improve these institutions.
The committee reviewed updated statistics. These concerned Libyans imprisoned abroad. 298 prisoners are under follow-up. 113 citizens have been released. Judgments were issued in 128 cases. Two cases involved withdrawal or deportation.
The committee noted judgments to release 47 prisoners. It also noted the deportation of 18 citizens. They emphasized that several cases are still pending completion. These cases require further follow-up.
The committee emphasized stronger communication. It also stressed coordination with Libyan embassies abroad. The Attorney General and Speaker of the House of Representatives must be regularly informed. They need official updates on these files. Necessary actions must be taken. This will speed up processing. It will also ensure the rights of Libyan citizens abroad.
At the meeting’s conclusion, an agreement was reached. They will propose establishing a specialized body. This body would monitor prisoners’ conditions. The proposal will be presented to the House of Representatives. This aims to unify institutional efforts. It will enhance legal and humanitarian oversight for this file.
