New Single-Bay Electric Substation First of Its Kind in Libya

The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) has announced the near completion of the new Wadi al-Shati 66kV substation located in the southern region near Sebha. This will be the first substation in the country to operate on a single bay.

In a press statement on Tuesday, GECOL revealed that the pioneering substation is a “model project and the first of its kind in Libya.” The state-owned company explained that the new facility will help reinforce and stabilize electricity transmission across towns and cities in the southern area.

According to last November’s statement, the innovative substation will feed power to several towns in the Wadi al-Shati, which are Alzowaia, Tamezzawa, Fuggum, and Al-Sreerah once operational. Prior electrical infrastructure in Libya has relied on traditional multi-bay high voltage substations.
