UN envoy to Libya is invited to Rome for election talks, says Italian foreign minister

U.N. Special Envoy to Libya Abdoulaye Bathily has been invited to Rome to discuss holding elections in the war-torn country, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani revealed.

In an interview with Italian website Decode39, Tajani did not disclose the date of the visit but he stressed that the “path leading to the elections must be clear.”

The Italian diplomat affirmed that Libya is a “strategic area” for Italy “for many reasons”, and pointed out that the stability of the North African country is “fundamental to the issue of migrants.”

However, Tajani also explained that, in order for the migrant crisis to be tackled, “it is necessary for Libya to have a stable government”.
