The UN has removed the travel ban on Safia Farkash Al-Barassi, the widow of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
In a press release issued last Wednesday, the UN said that the Security Council Committee, established pursuant to resolution 1970 (2011) concerning Libya, decided that Al-Barassi is no longer subject to the travel ban measure imposed since the 2011 Libyan civil war that toppled Gaddafi.
She was listed on the travel on 24 June 2011 due to her marital relation to Gaddafi and her “significant personal wealth, which could be used for regime purposes,” as per the UN resolution.
However, Al-Barassi will continue to be subject to the asset freeze measure.
