Benghazi – The Libyan Authority for Scientific Research has launched a voluntary afforestation campaign initiative under the slogan “Soil is life… and planting trees is giving,” with the participation of a number of educational and community institutions, including Al-Afdal University, the Blessed Tree Association, Al-Hadaeq Nursery, and Al-Naseem Venezia Nursery.
This initiative is part of efforts to spread environmental awareness and promote a culture of tree planting within educational institutions and vital areas, contributing to the expansion of green spaces and mitigating the effects of environmental changes.
The coordinator of the Authority’s Training Office and head of the campaign’s preparatory committee, Haifa Mohammed Samba, confirmed to the Libyan News Agency that this initiative primarily aims to instill a spirit of environmental concern in students and support their participation in volunteer activities that serve the community and benefit the local environment.
She noted that 200 trees have been provided for planting in six schools, divided between three private and three public schools, in addition to planting trees at Al-Afdal University and the British University in Libya, in a move aimed at involving the largest possible number of educational institutions in this promising environmental campaign.
She added that the campaign’s program also includes planting trees at the Al-Diyaa Mosque as part of its volunteer activities targeting religious and community institutions, with the goal of spreading the culture of a clean environment and green spaces in various public facilities.
For her part, campaign member and horticulture production specialist Rehab Al-Senussi Al-Zawi explained that the types of trees selected include pine, rose, and poinciana, which are species suited to the local climate and known for their ability to withstand harsh environmental conditions.
She also mentioned that the team accompanying the campaign provides practical, hands-on explanations to students on how to plant and care for the trees, aiming to promote positive environmental behavior and instill the concepts of nature conservation in young people.
Through its diverse activities, the campaign seeks to contribute to increasing green spaces and supporting environmental sustainability within the country’s educational and community institutions, to affirm the role of these institutions in building a responsible environmental awareness whose impact will extend to future generations.
