Benghazi – Benghazi Educational Eye Hospital has performed more than 15 free surgeries using advanced techniques to treat glaucoma. The operations are part of the “Localizing Treatment Program” and were supervised by ophthalmic surgery consultant Dr. Yasmine Al-Shukri. She said this is the first time such surgeries have been conducted in eastern Libya.
Al-Shukri told the Libyan News Agency that the procedures aim to reduce intraocular pressure and lower the risk of optic nerve damage. They also minimize complications and side effects typical of traditional surgery. Recovery takes between one and three months.
The program has also helped reopen a specialized glaucoma clinic operating throughout the week. New units have been established to treat newborns and children with the condition. National medical staff have received training from experienced doctors.
Al-Shukri urged citizens to get early checkups if they experience weakened vision, persistent eye pain, or chronic headaches. She noted a higher risk of glaucoma among those with a family history of the disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or nearsightedness.
