Abdulhamid Dbeibah, Prime Minister of the interim Government of National Unity, assured Stephanie Koury, the Deputy Special Representative for Political Affairs for Libya in the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), that he has issued the necessary decisions to financially support the Ministry of Interior and the High National Elections Commission. This support is aimed at ensuring the success of their mission to secure and organize municipal elections.
During their meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tripoli, Dbeibah and Koury discussed bolstering both local and international efforts to facilitate successful municipal elections. The discussion was reported by the “Our Government” platform on Facebook, which also highlighted Dbeibah and Koury’s agreement that municipal elections are a positive step towards supporting the political life in Libya. Dbeibah emphasized that he has instructed all government institutions to cooperate with the High National Elections Commission.
Dbeibah’s Meetings with European Ambassadors and US Envoy
Koury’s meeting with Dbeibah followed his meeting with ambassadors from EU member states accredited to Libya and a separate meeting three days earlier with Richard Norland, the US Special Envoy to Libya. In these meetings, the elections were a central topic of discussion among Western diplomats and their Libyan counterparts in Tripoli and Benghazi.
Earlier today, the High National Elections Commission announced the imminent opening of candidacies for municipal council elections. The commission urged potential candidates to prepare and submit the necessary documents and lists for their nominations.
