President of the Presidential Council Mohamed Menfi and Prime Minister of the interim Government of National Unity Abdulhamid Dbeibah discussed several political issues, primarily focusing on bolstering local efforts among all institutions and coordinating international efforts to support national and municipal elections.
The meeting, held on Thursday evening at the Presidential Council’s headquarters, was reported by the “Our Government” platform on Facebook.
The statement emphasized that both parties agreed on the necessity of successful municipal elections by supporting the High National Elections Commission and unifying various government agencies to coordinate with the commission.
Additionally, they concurred on the “need to coordinate international efforts to support the elections according to fair and implementable laws, and respect the will of the Libyan people in establishing elected legislative and executive bodies,” according to the statement.
Preparations for Municipal Elections
The High National Elections Commission began preparations for the elections of 60 municipal councils across Libya three weeks ago, initiating the voter registration process in anticipation of the municipal council elections.
The commission aims to conduct elections for 106 municipal councils throughout 2024, noting that the registration for the municipal council elections is entirely new and is based on residence within the municipality where the registration applicant will vote.
In terms of general elections, the political process remains stagnant due to the failure to agree on the laws governing parliamentary and presidential elections. Meanwhile, the United Nations mission plans to bring the presidential parties to the negotiating table, a goal that the outgoing UN envoy Abdoulaye Bathily was unable to achieve.
