Discovery of Ancient Theater and Greek Hippodrome in Susa

Monday, July 20, 2026 National 2 Mins Read
(WAL – Sousse): Discovery of Ancient Theater and Greek Hippodrome in Sousse

Susa – The Antiquities Authority in Cyrene has announced new archaeological discoveries in the ancient city of Apollonia (Susa). The finds include a seaside Roman theater, a rediscovered Greek racecourse, and several sacred complexes. These discoveries were made by a French archaeological mission working in Libya.

The announcement was made during an event attended by officials from the Libyan Antiquities Department, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Cyrene Antiquities Authority, the tourism police, the Apollonia Heritage and Culture Organization, and local scouts.

Vincent Michel, head of the French archaeological mission, said the newly discovered racecourse is of exceptional scientific and archaeological importance. He explained that it is unique, with no known parallels in Cyrenaica or the wider Mediterranean. This gives it significant historical value and will help researchers better understand the region’s history and cultural development.

French archaeologist Jean-Sylvain Cailliau said these findings represent an important scientific milestone, which may lead to a reinterpretation of Apollonia’s history and reveal new aspects of its cultural and historical role during Greek and Roman times. Preliminary studies, he added, confirm the significant scientific and historical importance of these discoveries.

Cailliau also stated that these finds further cement Apollonia’s status as one of Libya’s most important ancient cities. He confirmed that research and excavation efforts will continue, following internationally recognized scientific standards to document the new sites.

These discoveries are expected to contribute to both archaeological and historical scholarship concerning Cyrenaica, while also strengthening the tourism and cultural appeal of the cities of Cyrene and Susa. The results highlight the richness of Libya’s heritage and its importance regionally and internationally.
