EU Backs New UN Roadmap for Libyan Elections, Urges Swift Implementation

The European Union has officially welcomed a new political roadmap aimed at ending Libya’s long-standing stalemate and paving the way for national elections. In a statement released following a UN Security Council briefing on August 21, the EU and its member states commended the comprehensive plan presented by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Hanna Tetteh.

The roadmap, built on extensive consultations with the Libyan people, focuses on creating a viable constitutional framework for elections, unifying the country’s divided institutions under a new government, and launching a structured national dialogue to resolve critical issues.

The EU is urging all Libyan actors to swiftly implement the initial steps, including reforming the electoral commission, and has pledged its full support to the process, including holding accountable any individuals who obstruct progress.

Coinciding with the announcement, the EU also strongly condemned a reported rocket launch near the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) compound, labeling it an “unacceptable act of intimidation.” While commending the swift response from Libyan authorities to the incident, the delegation reiterated its unwavering support for UNSMIL’s mission.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the European Union’s full commitment to a stable, sovereign, and unified Libya, expressing hope that the new roadmap will lead to lasting peace and democratic governance for the country.
