Khalifa Haftar will run for president in the upcoming elections on December 24, an informed source tells The Libya Update.
According to the source, Haftar will make his nomination announcement this week in Benghazi after he received 250,000 of acclamation votes.
Haftar, who led the Libyan National Army (LNA) since 2014, stepped down from his post as general commander in September, making him eligible to run for president as stipulated by the parliament’s law.
The news notably comes shortly after the High National Election Commission (HNEC) announced today that the aspiring nominees for the presidential and parliamentary elections can officially file for candidacy tomorrow, with a November 22 deadline set for the presidential candidacy filing.
