Valletta, Malta | At-Taher Al-Baour, the Acting Foreign Minister of the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU), conducted an official visit to Malta on Wednesday, following an invitation from the Maltese side.
During the visit, Al-Baour held talks with his Maltese counterpart, Minister Ian Borg. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing issues of mutual concern, according to GNU Foreign Ministry.
Key points from the meeting included:
– Libyan Political Process: Al-Baour outlined the current political situation in Libya. Both sides emphasized the importance of supporting a peaceful path to consensus-based solutions for stability.
– Irregular Migration: A significant part of the talks was dedicated to enhancing cooperation on managing irregular migration, including joint efforts in border control and supporting development programs to address its root causes.
– Maritime Boundaries: The officials discussed maritime boundaries and agreed on the priority of bilateral negotiations, which could be expanded to multilateral formats if other nations are involved.
– International Affairs: The ministers exchanged views on the international situation, particularly regarding Ukraine and the Middle East. Minister Borg announced Malta’s intention to recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming UN General Assembly session in September.
Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to continued political consultation and coordination to enhance bilateral cooperation and serve common interests.
