Athens – Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis announced. Greece plans to further expand its territorial waters. This expansion will include the Aegean Sea. This decision comes despite previous Turkish threats. Turkey considers such a move a reason for war. Tensions between Greece and Turkey have eased. Both nations are NATO members.
This easing occurred in recent years. However, the two countries remain deeply at odds. Their dispute concerns the demarcation of continental shelves. This is specifically in the Aegean Sea.
Greece previously expanded its territorial waters. This was in the Ionian Sea. The expansion was from six to 12 nautical miles. This followed agreements with Italy. Greece also signed an agreement with Egypt. That agreement was for maritime border demarcation. This concerned the Eastern Mediterranean.
