Cairo – Speaker of the House of Representatives Aguila Saleh affirmed Libya’s desire to strengthen cooperation with Egypt. This includes political, economic, developmental, and cultural fields. He noted the two countries share a common history. Their relations are rooted in deep ties between the two peoples.
Speaking before the Egyptian House of Representatives on Monday, Saleh stated Libyan and Egyptian peoples fought colonial occupation together in the past. They later united against terrorism. Today, their partnership continues through development and reconstruction projects.
He highlighted that Libyan-Egyptian relations exceed traditional bilateral frameworks. This is due to extensive social, cultural, and family ties. Saleh emphasized Libyans appreciate Egypt’s supportive stance toward their country at all levels.
He added Cairo has stood by Libya through multiple historical stages. This began with supporting Libyan mujahideen during Italian colonialism. It extended to backing Libya against political, humanitarian, and terrorism crises in recent years.
Saleh praised Egypt’s role in supporting Libya’s unity and sovereignty. He considers Egypt instrumental in promoting a political settlement based on Libyan consensus. Egypt also backed efforts to unify institutions. It supported holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections.
Saleh also mentioned Egyptian support during the war on terrorist groups. He lauded Egypt’s humanitarian response after Storm Daniel struck Derna in 2023. Egyptian rescue and aid teams were among the first to arrive in the city. Egypt also sent the Mistral aircraft carrier to provide medical services to the injured.
