Libya – Member of the State Council Belkacem Gzait said that changing the council’s leadership has been at the heart of its internal crisis. He believes the outcome of the elections signals a continuation of the same political direction in the coming period.
Gzait told Al Jazeera Net that the State Council has gradually lost its influence, with some of its powers shifting to other bodies. He cited the work of the “6+6” committee tasked with drafting election laws, and recent agreements on sovereign positions, as examples.
He added that re-electing the current leadership means the same policies will continue as in recent years. He argued that this comes at a time when internal change is needed, given declining institutional performance and worsening crises faced by citizens.
Gzait stressed that disagreements within the council are natural for any parliamentary institution. The real challenge, he said, is managing these differences in a way that preserves the council’s role and effectiveness.
