Historic Achievement: Gulf of Sirte International Airport (SRX) Reopens After 15 Years

Sirte – The Director-General of the National Development Agency, Mahmud Elforjani, announced today, Saturday, the activation of the international code for the Gulf of Sirte Airport (SRX) for the first time in over a decade and a half, marking a historic achievement for the city.

In celebration of this occasion, units of the Libyan Arab Army participated in the festivities. An aerial drop by special forces teams and an air show are scheduled to take place in the skies over Sirte, with the drop occurring in the city square at 4:00 PM.

Additionally, three domestic flights arriving from Mitiga International Airport landed at Gulf of Sirte International Airport, carrying a number of guests invited to attend the celebration. The event was organized by the National Development Agency, with international efforts and under the supervision of the General Command of the Armed Forces, following many years during which the airport was shut down, looted, and neglected.

This achievement fulfills the dream of Sirte’s residents to have an international airport connecting the city to the rest of Libya and the world, highlighting the efforts to develop vital infrastructure and enhance national air traffic.
