An analytical report published by the English section of the Italian “Aviation News Agency” described Sirte Gulf International Airport as a “strategic project” aimed at revitalizing air traffic and commercial and economic activity in the central region. It considered its return an indicator of the resilience of a country moving on the path to stability and unification.
Return After a Long Halt
The report confirmed that October 25 and 26 witnessed crucial developments, represented by the resumption of operations at the airport after a halt of nearly 12 years. This was due to severe damage and looting following combat, as well as the instability that divided the country between competing administrations.
Internal and External Connection
The report indicated that the reopening is an important step in reconnecting eastern Libya with its west on one hand, and with the world on the other, which will support passenger and cargo movement and enhance opportunities for economic recovery.
Strategic Location and Infrastructure Support
It noted that the airport’s proximity to oil fields and ports makes it a supportive element for the infrastructure and the civil aviation sector in the central region.
Completion of Safety and Operational Requirements
The Executive Director of the National Development Agency, Mahmoud Al-Ferjani, said that “the reopening of the airport is a source of pride,” confirming that work is underway to complete all safety, administrative, and technical requirements to ensure its operational readiness.
