Benghazi – As part of efforts to raise women’s health awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Women’s Support Office at the Libyan Media Foundation organized a seminar emphasizing the importance of early detection and regular screenings. These measures play a key role in improving recovery rates and reducing complications.
Ilham Al-Barky, head of the Women’s Support Office, stressed the need for ongoing breast cancer awareness campaigns. She encouraged women to undergo routine exams, highlighting that early detection helps identify the disease in its initial stages and increases the chances of effective treatment and recovery.
Dr. Rafie Al-Tarhouni, an oncology specialist at Benghazi Medical Center, said breast cancer accounts for about 30 percent of all cancer cases treated at the center. He emphasized that early detection improves treatment outcomes.
Al-Tarhouni explained that discovering breast cancer in its early stages makes treatment easier and less expensive. Recovery rates can range from 70 to 97 percent, depending on the case and how early the disease is found. Delayed diagnosis can complicate treatment and increase the risk of complications.
He urged women not to ignore any changes in their breasts or postpone medical checkups due to fear or anxiety. He emphasized the importance of year-round awareness, not just in October.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health continues to carry out the “Reassure Us About You” campaign for early detection of breast, lung, and colon cancers. Screening services are being offered in Kish, Al-Majouri, and Al-Sabri areas, with online registration available.
These activities aim to promote a culture of prevention and early detection, and to raise community awareness about the value of regular screenings in reducing cancer risks and improving treatment outcomes.
