The Head of the Constitution Drafting Assembly, Al-Jilani Arhouma, criticized on Monday the remarks made by Parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh about drafting a new constitution.
In a parliamentary session yesterday, Saleh denounced attempts by some Libyan parties to push for a referendum on draft constitution that was issued by the Assembly in 2017. Instead, he called for forming “a committee of writers, intellectuals, thinkers and academics specialized in constitutional law” in order to draft another constitution.
Arhouma explained that the Assembly was “elected by the people in accordance with the constitutional declaration, and accomplished its task by drafting a draft constitution”
He also pointed out House of Representatives had prepared a referendum on it.
“Saleh cannot legally override the constitutional declaration,” Arhouma said.
