Tobruk – The Public Prosecution has uncovered a case of civil registry fraud at the Tobruk Civil Status Office. Authorities found that 54 national identification numbers were illegally issued to foreign nationals. These numbers were then used to obtain salaries, grants, and financial benefits meant for Libyan citizens, totaling approximately 420,000 dinars.
According to a statement from the prosecution, investigations under the Tobruk Court of Appeal revealed that the scheme involved foreigners working with a civil registry employee. They forged civil status data for a deceased citizen and registered one of the foreigners as the head of the household.
The suspects falsified six marriage certificates and official birth notices. These fraudulent documents allowed them to obtain the 54 national IDs.
One foreigner used a forged national number to secure a job with the Central Security Administration in Al-Battan. The other national numbers were used to collect salaries and benefits reserved for Libyan families and citizens.
The prosecution stated that the arrested foreign national has been placed in pretrial detention. Authorities are pursuing the other suspects involved in the forgery and use of fake documents. All administrative documents based on the forged information have been suspended.
