Benghazi – In an official statement issued this Friday evening, the Second Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mesbah Douma Awhida, affirmed full support for the popular movement demanding the acceleration of presidential and parliamentary elections, calling on the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) to take immediate action.

The statement, issued from the city of Benghazi, noted that this position stems “from national responsibility and respect for the free will of the people.” It emphasized the necessity of opening candidacy to all individuals who meet the legal requirements without exclusion, ensuring the right of the Libyan people to choose their president and representatives without guardianship or delay.

Call to the Commission and Emphasis on Laws

Douma called on the HNEC to adopt “urgent measures” to ensure a free and fair electoral process. The statement explicitly indicated that these elections must be conducted in accordance with the laws regarding the “Election of the Head of State” and the “Election of the House of Representatives” issued by the House, designating this as the only path to achieving political stability and building state institutions.

Message to the International Community

In a related context, the Second Deputy addressed the international community, urging it to support the will of the Libyan people to head to the ballot boxes. The statement warned against what it described as “negative interference” obstructing the democratic path, calling for support for the peaceful transfer of power in accordance with the will of the Libyans.
