Sirte Free Zone Explores Cooperation with Turkish Arkas Group to Develop Sirte Port

Mahmud Elforjani, Chairman and General Manager of the Sirte Free Zone, held a meeting with the Board of Directors of Turkey’s Arkas Holding Group, one of the leading companies specializing in port operations and maritime transport in Turkey and the surrounding region.

Arkas currently operates four specialized ports across Istanbul and other parts of Turkey and is considered one of the largest port and shipping operators in the region, providing services at more than 84 ports worldwide with a fleet of 54 vessels.

The discussions focused on exploring ways to leverage Arkas Group’s expertise in enhancing and developing maritime operations at Sirte Port, with the aim of increasing its efficiency and transforming it into a promising regional logistics hub.

The two sides also agreed to collaborate on training and capacity-building programs for personnel from the Sirte Free Zone in Turkey. Additionally, they committed to holding regular meetings between their respective technical teams to exchange expertise and develop joint development plans.

The visit concluded with a field tour of one of the group’s ports, where Dr. Elforjani observed the scale of operations and trade activity, including the port’s operational capabilities such as fixed and mobile cranes, designated container storage areas, and large multi-purpose warehouses.

This preliminary visit forms part of broader efforts to transfer Turkish experience and know-how to Sirte Port and strengthen its readiness to integrate into global trade networks.
