The State Property Authority in the city of Jaghbub has handed over the sites of the Imam Muhammad bin Ali al-Senussi Zawiya and the Religious Institute, decades after they were vandalized in 1984.
The Authority stated that the handover of the Zawiya and the Institute is part of its efforts to preserve religious endowments and revive historical landmarks.
The Imam Muhammad bin Ali al-Senussi Zawiya in the Jaghbub oasis is one of the most prominent religious and historical landmarks in Libya. It was founded by Imam al-Senussi in the mid-nineteenth century to serve as a center for spreading knowledge, religious outreach, and teaching Islamic law and the Arabic language.
The Zawiya became the headquarters of the Senussi order and a beacon of knowledge and spirituality in the Libyan desert, attracting students of knowledge from various regions.
In 1984, it was subjected to acts of vandalism, and today, the relevant authorities are working to revive and preserve it as an important part of Libya’s religious and national heritage.
