Benghazi – Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Stephanie Khouri, met Thursday in Benghazi with Ibrahim Bushnaf, head of the National Committee for the Follow-up of Prisons and Detainees. The two officials discussed ongoing efforts to improve detention conditions and strengthen the protection of detainees’ rights.

According to a statement published by the UN mission, they also reviewed preparations for an upcoming international conference on justice and reform, set to take place in Benghazi next week. They emphasized the importance of the event in raising awareness, encouraging dialogue on justice and the rule of law, and supporting practical reforms to improve detention conditions in line with Libya’s human rights obligations.

The UN Support Mission in Libya commended the committee’s continued efforts to protect detainees’ rights and ensure respect for human rights in detention facilities. The mission stressed that safeguarding the dignity and rights of all detainees is essential to building public trust and upholding the rule of law and state institutions.
