Ahmed Al-Qarari, the Director of the Zoonotic Diseases Department at the National Center for Disease Control, confirmed that the city of Tarhuna has recorded the highest rates of Leishmaniasis infection over the past five years compared to other Libyan cities.
In a statement to Almasar TV, Al-Qarari explained that the Dawoun area is also one of the regions that records the most annual cases of the disease, noting that Leishmaniasis is only a skin disease and does not affect other organs of the body, but it requires a long treatment period.
He clarified that the disease is transmitted only from animals to humans and not between people, stressing that the epidemiological situation is stable. The Center does not anticipate an increase in the number of cases, as the disease is endemic in the region extending from south of Sirte to the Tunisian border.
