An analytical report published by the London-based “Al-Arab” newspaper discussed statements by Massad Boulos, former US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Arab and African affairs, regarding the American position on the political process in Libya.
US Diplomatic Move to Enhance the Role of the United Nations
The report quoted Boulos, in statements to the American agency “Bloomberg” from the Italian capital, Rome, as saying that the United States’ diplomatic engagement aims to enhance the role of the United Nations and ensure that fundamental Libyan institutions operate within a unified framework. He noted that a new round of negotiations on Libya will be held soon to revive the stalled political process.
Signs of Progress in the Libyan Peace Process
Boulos added that the Libyan peace process is showing signs of progress, stressing that a potential agreement is now achievable, despite the difficulty of implementing a peace process overnight. However, he expressed hope that the process would advance quickly, recalling that the conflict in Libya has been ongoing for many years.
Denial of Russian Troop Redeployment in Libya
The American envoy clarified that the United States has no information indicating that Russian forces withdrawn from Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime have been redeployed to Libya, emphasizing that the American goal is to ensure the unity of vital Libyan institutions and support the United Nations’ path.
Renewing International Consensus and Supporting Elections
Observers noted that Libyans hope the upcoming round of talks will lead to national elections that end more than a decade of instability and foreign interventions, considering the joint move between Washington and the United Nations an opportunity to restore balance and push the political process towards a unified solution.
