UN envoy to Libya Abdoulaye Bathily said Friday he met Libyan Presidential Council (LPC) Deputy Abdullah Al-Lafi “to review and discuss next steps for bringing stability to Libya including through the national reconciliation process.”
“After the National Reconciliation Conference preparatory meeting yesterday, I met Presidential Council Deputy Mr. Abdullah Al-Lafi to review and discuss next steps for bringing stability to Libya including through the national reconciliation process,” Bathily tweeted.
Bathily said he commended the Presidential Council for its efforts and reiterated the importance that all parties commit to a comprehensive national reconciliation process.
UN envoy reaffirmed UNSMIL’s support for these efforts as a contribution towards long term stability and peace in Libya.
“National reconciliation in Libya will succeed if it is inclusive and managed by a dedicated and qualified team whose work is based on the Libyan historical experience as well as lessons learnt elsewhere in the region and Africa,” he pointed out.
Bathily added that UN Support Mission in Libya will provide all the technical support needed to advance the process led by the National Reconciliation Commission, in close coordination with the African Union, to successfully implement a national reconciliation strategy for Libya.
