U.S. Special Envoy to Libya, Ambassador Richard Norland, has welcomed the High National Elections Commission’s announcement that voter registration for municipal council elections is now underway.
“Successful municipal elections serve as a vital opportunity to demonstrate the viability of Libya’s electoral infrastructure, a way to engage with the Libyan people on the issues most important to them, and a chance for local communities to elect their local leaders,” said Norland.
“Successful municipal elections will serve as proof of Libya’s ability to eventually hold national elections, and I encourage continued work toward reaching that goal,” he added.
UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) had also welcomed the opening of the voter registration process for the upcoming municipal council elections in 60 municipalities, encouraging “all eligible Libyans, including women & youth, to register to exercise their right to elect the future leadership of their municipalities.”
