Libya – Speaker of the House of Representatives Aguila Saleh has called on Major General Hussein Al-Ayeb to continue as head of the Libyan Intelligence Service. Saleh urged Al-Ayeb to fully exercise all legal powers granted to him and to oversee the management and operations of the agency and its branches.
In an official letter, Saleh emphasized the importance of ensuring regular operations and protecting the agency’s premises, documents, information, assets, and equipment. He instructed Al-Ayeb to take all necessary measures to prevent any illegal acts, assaults, or unauthorized possession, and to initiate legal action against anyone found in violation of the law.
Saleh said the letter was prompted by recent developments concerning the leadership of the Libyan Intelligence Service. He cited the Constitutional Declaration, its amendments, the Libyan Political Agreement, and Law No. 8 of 2023 on reorganizing the agency as the legal basis for his instructions. He stressed the need to uphold constitutional and legal legitimacy, preserve state institutions, and ensure the continued functioning of public services.
Saleh also highlighted the need for ongoing cooperation between the agency, other state institutions, and international and regional partners. He requested regular reports from Al-Ayeb on the agency’s activities, its legal procedures, and any updates or exceptional circumstances that could affect its performance.
Finally, the Speaker urged the intelligence agency’s leadership and staff to adhere to constitutional and legal principles, maintain the unity, discipline, and independence of the institution, and avoid any actions that could compromise its national duties.
