High Council of State member Ali Al-Sweh expressed an understanding of the public’s lack of trust in the two councils, in light of their repeated failure over the past years to reach consensus and achieve progress on key files, chief among them the legal framework for elections and changing the occupants of sovereign positions, in a statement to the “Asharq Al-Awsat” newspaper.
Al-Sweh said that all scenarios are now open; there are members who want elections quickly, realizing the impossibility of continuing the governmental and institutional division and its repercussions, including weak oversight of public funds, while others seek to engage with the UN roadmap to avoid being accused of “obstruction.”
Despite acknowledging a divergence in orientations between the two councils regarding presidential candidates, Al-Sweh believes that the laws file does not constitute a stumbling block as some imagine, considering it likely that a consensus will be reached to adopt the proposals and recommendations of the advisory committee to resolve the disputes over those laws.
