Violent clashes between two rival armed groups erupted last night in Zawiya, a city under the territorial control of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh’s government, located west of the capital Tripoli.
According to multiple press reports, at least one person is dead and several injured during the clashes, which continued throughout the night. After a break of about three hours, the armed clashes resumed this morning at dawn and are reportedly still ongoing.
The causes of the clashes are not yet known, while local witnesses say that the streets of the city are deserted with the shops closed.
The city is home to the largest oil refinery in Libya and is home to one of the most important oil terminals in Tripolitania.
