A news report published by the English-language Bengali site “bdnews24” confirmed that Bengali authorities repatriated 928 of their citizens from Libya in three batches last October.
Ongoing Repatriations from Tripoli and Benghazi
The report explained that the repatriation flights were organized on October 9, 23, and 30, transferring the migrants from Libya to Bangladesh, while a number of Bengali citizens remain detained in the areas of Tajoura in the capital, Tripoli, and Ganfouda in the city of Benghazi.
Diplomatic Efforts to Ensure Safe Return
The report indicated that Bengali authorities are continuing their diplomatic efforts to secure the release of the remaining detainees and ensure their early return, stressing that the safety, rights, and dignity of Bangladeshi nationals in Libya are a top priority for the government. It also clarified that these efforts aim to facilitate the voluntary and safe return of those wishing to leave Libyan territory.
Exemption from Penalties to Facilitate Return
The report concluded by noting that Bengali diplomatic interventions contributed to exempting the migrants from prison sentences and financial fines, which enabled them to return to their country legally and in an organized manner.
