Officials of the Derna Reconstruction Fund met today with representatives of French company SIDEM to discuss repair for Derna’s seawater desalination plant.
The desalination plant, which was originally developed by SIDEM, was severely damaged during massive floods unleashed by heavy rainfall from Storm Daniel on September 10, which crashed through two aging dams, sweeping entire districts of the city into the Mediterranean.
A report by the World Bank, United Nations and European Union said the disaster affected about 1.5 million people or 22% of Libya’s population, and cited figures from the U.N. humanitarian agency OCHA of 4,352 confirmed deaths with 8,000 still missing.
According to a statement by the Fund, the purpose of the SIDEM meeting is to conduct “an in-depth technical inspection to determine the plant’s needs for spare parts in order to carry out full maintenance work.
During the meeting, “all the technical and logistical programs for the technical evaluation and the work plan were presented.”
