Tripoli – The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) has sounded the alarm, warning of an imminent “total collapse” of the electrical grid in the western region, which threatens to cause a complete blackout. The warning comes after a group shut down the main gas pipeline that supplies the Zawiya power station, located west of the capital, Tripoli.
In an urgent statement, the company explained that this action led to the shutdown of four main generating units at the station: units one, four, five, and six. It emphasized that this dangerous development threatens the stability of the entire electrical system at a critical time when the company is already suffering from significant challenges, most notably a severe shortage of fuel required to operate other power plants.
“These developments signal a real danger of a total collapse of the electrical grid, which could result in all generation units going out of service and a complete blackout in various regions,” the statement added.
GECOL appealed to all relevant authorities to assume their national and legal responsibilities, calling for immediate intervention to support the company in maintaining the continuity of a service that represents the lifeline for citizens and all vital sectors.
